Ventriculo-peritoneal (VP) shunt

A VP shunt is a small tube that is surgically placed into the fluid spaces of the brain, called the ventricle. The tube is then tunneled under the skin and into the abdominal cavity.

The VP shunt removes excess fluid from the brain and spine. By sending this fluid to the abdominal cavity, it can be reabsorbed into the blood.
