Craniectomy

Our specially trained Neurosurgeons remove a portion of bone from the skull to create more room for the brain to swell or heal under the scalp following a neurosurgical procedure. The bone may also be removed if there is concern for infection. The bone is placed in a sterile freezer and can be replaced in approximately 6 to 12 weeks using a cranioplasty procedure. Patients are required to wear a helmet during the period of time while the bone is removed to prevent injury to the brain.
